I received a planer from my brother, but I'm not sure if he said it was broken. I've been trying to use it, but it just doesn't work. I spent about 30 minutes sharpening the blade on a stone, but it still isn't cutting. I'm not sure what I should do next to troubleshoot this issue.

If you’re dealing with bad shavings, it might just be a matter of adjusting the depth of cut or even changing the type of wood you’re using. Try some softer wood if you can. Also, with your current condition, don’t push yourself too hard; it's better to rest and come back to this when you're feeling better!
It sounds like you might need to adjust how your plane is set up. I recommend checking out some video tutorials on using hand planes. They'll show you how to set everything up correctly and troubleshoot common issues. That might give you some ideas on what to try next!
First things first, is your blade sharp and adjusted properly? Make sure the sole of the plane is flat. If it’s not taking any shavings, double-check that the iron is in contact with the wood. Using a sharpie to test the flatness can really help you out. Pictures would also help figure out what's going on!
