Where Can I Find Beginner Hand Tool Projects?

Asked By CraftyGiraffe42 On

I'm new to woodworking and focusing on hand tools since I'm living in an apartment where using power tools isn't an option. I've got a basic set of tools, including chisels and a Ryoba, but I'm struggling to find beginner projects that don't require power tools. I've searched YouTube but most videos emphasize using table saws or other power tools, which isn't helpful for me. What resources or specific projects would you recommend for someone just starting out with hand tools? Thanks in advance for any advice!

If you're looking for structured learning, check out The Hand Tool School by Shannon Rogers. He offers a laid-back curriculum starting with basic skills and leading to more advanced projects. It's tailored for hand tool users and incredibly helpful for beginners.

Have you considered Rex Krueger? He has both a YouTube channel and a book titled Everyday Woodworking which is full of beginner-friendly projects. His instructional style is very approachable and covers a lot of different projects that you can tackle without power tools.

Rex is fantastic! His projects help you build skills progressively, and the plans are easy to follow.

True! Plus, he often suggests tools that are budget-friendly, perfect for a small setup.

Don't forget about resources like your local library as well! They often have woodworking books specifically for beginners with lots of hand tool projects outlined. Just remember, almost any project done with power tools can also be accomplished with hand tools—you just have to be creative in your approach!

CedarCraft -

Great idea! Libraries can have old woodworking books that focus purely on hand tools.

A good point! Basic projects like picture frames or simple boxes can be done with minimal tools.

Check out Paul Sellers on YouTube; he's a great resource for hand tool woodworking. His beginner projects like toolboxes and dovetail joints are simple and effective. Also, Jim Kingshott has some classic videos that cover essential techniques. I'd suggest starting with planing and dimensioning wood to get the hang of it. Once you’re comfortable, try making a box using nails or screws to begin with—it's a great first project!

I love Paul Sellers too! His projects are straightforward, and you can really learn a lot from his method.

Definitely agree about the box-making as a starter! It’s a perfect way to practice your skills.

The English Woodworker is another good YouTube channel to look into for hand tool projects! It's run by Richard Maguire, and he focuses heavily on traditional techniques. For projects, I recommend starting with simple boxes or even a small table. The Minimalist Woodworker book by Vic Tesolin is also great—it features beginner-friendly projects that won’t overwhelm you.

SimpleSawdust -

Yes! Minimalist Woodworker is a quick read and provides clear instructions for beginners.

I think making boxes is a great way to build skills without taking up too much space.
