Hey everyone! I'm currently working on a Chinese style step stool where the legs will directly fit into the top. I want the legs to be angled both sideways and forward. I've done angled mortises before, but this double splay is new territory for me. I'm not comfortable with drilling beforehand, so I'm looking for advice on how to chop these mortises accurately while keeping both angles in mind. My plan is to attach a marking gauge for the sideways angle while intuitively figuring out the forward angle, which is almost vertical. I don't have access to any high-tech tools like laser lines. Any suggestions? Am I crazy for attempting dual-angled mortises? There's really not much information out there about this! Thanks a lot!

You might want to consider using round tenons for this. They can fit into the mortises more easily when you’re dealing with angled cuts.
