How to Block My Neighbor’s Dog From Seeing Into My Yard?

I'm dealing with an unruly neighbor whose giant German Shepherd loves to bark at everything, especially when we're in our yard. They've been trying to keep him inside at night, but he still paces along our shared fence, which is about 50-70 feet long. While I'm working on landscaping and eventually plan to install a taller privacy fence, I'm looking for temporary solutions to block his view into our yard. I've planted some Camellia, but that's a long-term fix. I was thinking about using corrugated sheet metal framed in wood, but I want to avoid anything that looks bad, like tarps. Also, if there's a way to reduce the noise he makes when he spots us or our dog, that would be awesome!

You could think about building a native fence using wooden posts and some twine with prunings from local trees. It creates a nice, natural barrier and can keep the German Shepherd from seeing into your yard altogether, plus it’s eco-friendly!

Consider looking for a balcony privacy screen that attaches to the fence. They're available in various styles and sizes. This could help prevent your dog from barking at the neighbor’s dog until he calms down and decides to befriend them instead! Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion, that sounds promising!

Definitely explore those high-pitched noise devices. They won’t harm the dogs but can help teach them to stop barking aggressively.

I recommend trying a noise-emitting device that activates when it detects barking. It's humanly inaudible but annoying for dogs. We used one when facing a persistent barker nearby, and it definitely toned down the noise from the first night!

While you wait for the camellias to grow, check out privacy screens made for chain link fences. They’re easy to install and can block the dog's view right away. You might also want to try an ‘anti-barking device’ by the fence; it makes a sound that dogs dislike when they bark, although it doesn’t work on every dog.

I actually tried one of those barking devices! They weren't too effective for me, but I've seen ones that activate a sprinkler, which might do the trick.

I suggest getting a privacy screen that you can attach to your existing fence. It's a quick, affordable option, and you can usually set it up in under an hour. Just look for a product designed for chain link fencing; it works well!

Great idea! If your current fence is only 4 feet high and that dog can jump, consider getting a taller screen to really block him off.
