How Can I Strongly Join Two Wooden Blocks with a Dowel?

Hey everyone! I'm tackling a DIY project where I need to join a dowel between two wooden blocks. I'll be putting some significant weight on this setup, as I plan to stand on it. I'm concerned that typical wood glue won't hold up. I've been looking into options like threaded inserts with hanger bolts or even dowel screws, but I'm not sure what the best approach is for stability. I don't have many tools—just a drill and a hand saw—so I'd love any advice you might have on how to do this effectively!

To create a strong joint, I recommend drilling a hole through both pieces of wood and inserting the dowel as a support, almost like the rungs of a ladder. This method will reliably carry the weight of an adult. Just make sure the dowel is secured in place with glue!

So, I should run the dowel completely through the blocks? Would it be better if it goes all the way through or just partially? That sounds promising!
