I recently got my hands on some beautiful reclaimed barnwood for a project, but it's quite rough to the touch. I'm looking to achieve a smoother finish while still showcasing the wood's lovely colors and rustic appeal. I have access to an electric sander and a planer, but I'm unsure which tool would be best to use to get that perfect balance between a polished look and the original barnwood feel. Any advice?

Just a caution: if you sand or plane too much, you might lose that nice patina. An interesting trick is to sand it down to your liking, then let it sit outside for a while to regain some character. Some people even use liquid "patina" solutions after finishing, but I haven't tried that myself. There are plenty of YouTube videos on it, though!
In my experience, a wire brush lets you maintain control really well. Along with that, sanding with dull paper works too! After you get it right, you can apply a water-based finish for a neat look. If you're using a hand plane, just a heads up—wear gloves; I once got a nasty splinter! Testing on some scraps first is a good idea too.
You might want to consider using a power brusher; they’re great for this type of wood! You can choose different brush types depending on how aggressive you want to be. It works pretty well to keep that reclaimed look while smoothing it out a bit.
