Why Does My Chunky Potting Mix Separate?

I've been using a chunky potting mix for my plants, which consists of about 30% bark and 30% perlite. My usual watering method involves soaking the plants in their nursery pots for 15 minutes in an outer pot, then draining. Lately, I've noticed that the bark and perlite tend to concentrate at the surface, likely because the finer materials settle at the bottom. Is this something others experience, or could it indicate a problem with my mix? Appreciate any insights!

I'm intrigued as well! Just to clarify, what's making up the other 40% of your mix? I’ve noticed that even when I buy soil-less mixes, the bark and perlite often settle at the top. Makes me wonder if that doesn't matter much once the plant gets more established!

The other 40% is potting soil and worm castings. They seem really healthy, so I'm not too worried—it just made me think that maybe the chunkiness is less consistent deeper down!

I've had the same issue! Curious to see what others say too, since I wonder if I'm doing something wrong with my mix.

The plants seem fine, I'm just trying to understand how it all works.
