Is Spring Garlic Planting a Bad Idea?

I've had garlic on my gardening wishlist forever, and I'm finally feeling motivated to give it a try! I know it's not the best time of year to start, but is it totally hopeless if I plant now? I'm planning to use some organic garlic from the grocery store, and honestly, I don't have high expectations—anything I can grow would be a win! Just an FYI, I'm in Nebraska, where we usually see the last frost around early April. Any tips or advice would be really helpful!

While planting garlic in spring won't yield as great results as a fall planting, it's definitely not a lost cause! Make sure to pick up your garlic soon and try to store it in a brown paper bag in the fridge to give it a little chill treatment. I can't say for sure when you should plant in Nebraska, but you'll want to get those cloves in the ground as soon as the weather allows!

Thanks for the tip! I’ll store it in the fridge and plant it as soon as possible!

I'm also in Nebraska and just went ahead and planted some softneck garlic today. I think the sooner you plant it before our little cold snap, the better your chances are for a nice harvest in July! Spring garlic might not bulb quite like fall-planted stuff, but it still tastes great and can sell well at markets!

That’s great to hear! I’m excited about the summer harvest already!

I've planted garlic from the supermarket a few years back, and some of it is still thriving in my garden! You might even consider giving it a quick freeze beforehand; I’ve heard that can help mimic the winter chill. Just try to get it in the ground before the last frost and you might be pleasantly surprised!
