Can You Turn a Car Alternator into a Motor Using a 3-Phase Outlet?

I'm curious if it's feasible to convert a car alternator into a motor that runs off a standard 3-phase wall outlet. I know it's technically possible to use an alternator as a motor, but I'd like to skip the battery setup and connect it directly to mains power for applications like power tools. I assume I'd need transformers to step down the voltage, but what other challenges or limitations should I be aware of?

While it is technically possible to use an alternator as a motor, it's not practical at all. Alternators are designed with brushes, and they behave similarly to brushless motors. However, the inner coil needs a lot of saturation just to initiate movement, and driving it with a brushless driver can get complex. Honestly, you'd be better off looking for a washing machine motor or something similar; they’re much easier to work with and more efficient for your needs.

Yes, it’s possible to use a car alternator with a 3-phase supply, but keep in mind that the available torque at 60 Hz will be very low. Plus, you would need significant current, which could be a drawback depending on your application.

You can indeed do it with a lot of extra gear, but I wouldn't recommend it for practical use. The complexity and equipment required really outweigh the benefits.
