I'm looking for tips on improving soil aeration for my plants. What types of soil or additives do you recommend to keep it breathable? Any specific mixes that work well?

Perlite is my go-to because it’s affordable and light. Just be careful because it can float up to the surface when you water. For a more stable option, pumice or lava rocks could be better, especially if you’re worried about your pots tipping over. Also, avoid using smooth sand since it can cling to roots and hold too much water.

I've switched to using coarse coco chunks instead of peat-based soils. They hold moisture while still allowing for great oxygen flow. You can also try adding pumice, perlite, or leca pebbles to your mix. Just keep in mind that the material of your pot can affect drainage too; I find terracotta works better than glazed clay or plastic pots because they breathe better.

Most folks I know rely on vermiculite or perlite for aeration. You can also use pine bark for good measure. But just a heads up, some of these materials can have a pretty significant environmental impact.
