I've been repurposing some LED strips and power supplies from old display cabinets to light up my workshop. I'm planning to use only 2 meters of an 18-meter LED strip. Is it a waste to stick with the original 12V 30A power supply? Also, what other projects or devices could I use this power supply for?

If it's a modern switch-mode power supply, you shouldn't worry about efficiency. These types only draw what they need plus a tiny bit extra. Just check the input voltage range—if it says something like 100-240 VAC, you're good to go! If it's a set voltage like 115V, then it’s likely an older, less efficient transformer type. Since yours is around 10 years old and accepts a wide range of voltages, you’re in the clear! Maybe consider wiring other 12V devices in your workshop to save on outlet space.
That power supply is actually popular among ham radio operators for powering their transceivers. You could also use it to run a car radio in your garage for sound!
There's also a chance you could use it to charge deep cycle GC2 batteries if that’s something you’re interested in! By the way, do you have a name or model for the original power supply?
