What Should I Do About My Broken Garage Door Spring?

I just moved into a new house and noticed that one side of my garage door spring is broken, with about 6 inches separated. The door still works fine for now, but I'm worried about whether I should replace the spring before it leads to bigger issues. What do you all think?

Definitely don’t try to fix this yourself. It's best to call in a professional since this is not a DIY job unless you know exactly what you’re doing. Garage door springs are super dangerous, and they can cause serious injuries if mishandled.

100% agree! I've heard of people getting hurt trying to DIY springs. Just let a pro handle it.

You probably have a pair of springs, and with one broken, the other one is doing all the work now, which is bad news. If you keep using the door, you risk the remaining spring breaking too. Plus, your opener is lifting way more weight than it's designed for and might get damaged. I'd recommend not using the garage door anymore until you can get the springs replaced.

Exactly! It’s really not worth the risk to keep using it. Just get it fixed ASAP.

If you’re dealing with a torsion spring, it could hold out for a bit, especially if it's a smaller door. However, if you have an opener, be cautious—it's now lifting more weight than it should. My own 12' door’s spring broke, and the door wouldn't budge until I replaced it. It’s definitely risky to keep using it like this, as one spring is taking all the strain, which can misalign the door.
