Struggling with Knife Control in My First Woodcarving Project

Hey everyone! I'm venturing into wood carving for the very first time and decided to try my hand at the 5-minute wizards technique. However, I've been having a tough time maintaining control of the knife, which has led to a few ruined projects. I know to place my thumb on the knife for better grip, but I'm looking for additional tips to improve my control. Any advice would be immensely appreciated!

Yeah, as others mentioned, those stop cuts are your best friend. Don’t rush it! If it takes longer than planned, that's totally fine—it's about learning the technique. And consider positioning your hands better. Push with your thumb on your left hand to guide the knife. It really helps with control!

Great suggestion! I’ll practice that technique.

Honestly, if you're a newbie, you should focus on slowing down. Using stop cuts can make a huge difference, and thinner pieces are easier to manage. Remember, if you want a good outcome, it might not be a 5-minute job!

Make sure to integrate stop cuts into your technique; they really help in controlling where your cuts end. Also, try making smaller, more manageable cuts—they're much easier to handle. Patience is key here!

Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely try the stop cuts next time.
