Last year, I tried burying sardines in my garden after planting the tomatoes, which didn't work out well because the feral cats dug them up. This time around, I'm planning to bury the sardines before I put my plants in. I'm starting my tomatoes indoors in a grow tent, aiming for them to be about 12" to 18" tall when I transfer them outside into 50-gallon pots. I also want to experiment with growing in coco coir this season. My question is, how deep should I bury the sardines to prevent predators from smelling them? I heard about using chicken wire over the soil, but that won't work for me, so I'd love some advice on keeping them hidden.

I saw a gardener on YouTube discuss this, and he buries sardines about 10 inches deep. He also uses garden lime over the fish to help mask the smell and deter animals. It’s a neat trick that really helps!
I'm not sure about the economics of using sardines since they seem a bit extravagant for gardening. But if you're fishing for them yourself, it can be a great natural fertilizer. Just make sure you're using them wisely and not just wasting money on cans!
Yeah, I catch sardines myself too! It’s not too far for me, so it makes sense.

Oh groovy, thanks for the tip! Just what I needed.
