How Can I Tell If My Solar Panels Are Operating at Maximum Capacity?

I have 19 solar panels on my home, and I'm trying to figure out whether they're working at their full potential. For example, yesterday they generated 20.3 kWh on a sunny day, and so far today, they're at 26.3 kWh, with a few more hours of sunlight left. Does that seem correct to you?

You should also check if your solar system has an app or monitoring feature. Many setups allow you to see real-time and daily production stats. For instance, I use Victron's setup and I've noticed my 2400W system can produce slightly more than its rated capacity under the right conditions. My production varies a lot between winter and summer, so that's something to keep in mind too!

Yeah, I have an app to monitor my system as well!

To assess your solar panel performance, it helps to know a few key details like the wattage of your panels and your location. This gives you a better idea of how many sunlight hours you should expect. Remember, daily production can vary significantly, so it's best to track the system's performance over a longer period, like a month or even a year. Annual averages are usually more reliable. If you haven't had your system for a year yet, you could try using the NREL's PVWatts calculator for an estimate, but make sure you input accurate details.

It’s important to consider factors like panel type, their angle, cleanliness, and your specific location. Some believe that systems can't reach their rated capacity in real-world conditions, but that's not entirely true. I've observed my own system doing quite well under optimal conditions, so don't let the general stats discourage you; it can happen!

While lab conditions might show ideal outcomes, situations in the field can deliver impressive results too!
