Best Tips for Painting Trim and Closet Doors Without Peeling

I just moved into a new house and noticed that the paint on some trim and a closet door can be easily scraped off with a nail. I'm considering repainting everything, but I'm worried about whether the new paint will stick. What's the best approach to ensure that the paint stays on? Should I sand it down, use a primer, and what type of paint should I choose to get a clean, glossy finish—water-based or oil-based?

If you're thinking about priming, I wonder if it might still peel off later? I'd suggest trying to fully remove the old paint with an abrasive pad first, but just be prepared—it's a tedious job!

It seems like there's latex paint over an oil-based layer. You'll want to start by priming everything with an oil-based primer before applying your new paint, whatever finish you choose. That should help keep the new paint from peeling off like the old stuff did.

I can't recommend KILZ primer enough for this type of project! Just like you said, it sounds like they painted latex on top of oil, and using the right primer will make a big difference in the adhesion of your new paint.
