Hey everyone! I'm looking to add some decorative details to my white metal IKEA cabinet. It's in good shape with no rust, but I want to make it look cuter. Do I need to clean it with acetone before painting? Is priming necessary? What type of paint works best for hand painting details (I prefer not to use spray paint)? Also, should I seal it once I'm done? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Another option I’ve found useful is to clean it with vinegar, then use an oil-based sealer like Kilz, possibly in two coats. After painting, you might not need any extra sealer, which can save you some steps!
To get started, clean the cabinet with soapy water or rubbing alcohol instead of acetone. Lightly sanding the surface can help paint stick better. For painting details, acrylic or enamel paint would work well. To protect your work, consider sealing it with a clear acrylic or polyurethane topcoat afterward.
Painting over a pre-finished surface can be tricky, so I recommend the following steps:
1. Sand the entire cabinet to create a better grip.
2. Apply a primer to help the new paint adhere.
3. Use acrylic polyurethane for the paint; it offers good durability and UV resistance.
Try to give the paint a day to cure before adding your decorative details. If you're short on time, you could just sand the area where you're painting, but the results might be unpredictable. Good luck!
