I'm in a bit of a bind here! The plumbers didn't install the drain pipe at the right height on the kitchen side, and now that the cabinets and countertop are in place, I can't access it anymore. I need to cut a hole in the shower wall (which is tiled with subway tiles) to get to that plumbing. What kind of project am I looking at? Can I patch it up afterwards, and how reliable is waterproofing in this case? I've seen mixed opinions online about it.

Cutting into your shower tile wall is definitely a challenge, but it sounds like it's your best option. Just be careful when you’re cutting the tiles – a wet saw can help get clean edges. Once you have access, make sure to re-route the plumbing correctly before sealing everything up. When you're patching, use a good quality waterproof membrane to ensure it’s sealed properly. I’ve had success with this method before!
I've done something similar, and honestly, it can be a bit of a nightmare! Make sure you check your local codes before you cut, as you might find that there are regulations around plumbing access. As for waterproofing, if you take your time and use the right materials, it should hold up just fine. However, make sure you're using high-quality products to prevent any future leaks.
Good point about local codes! Additionally, try to use a backer board for better support and waterproofing.

Totally agree with you! Also, don’t forget to let everything dry completely before you patch it up to prevent any mold issues!
