What Color Primer Should I Use When Painting Over Dark Colors?

I'm planning to repaint a small bedroom, switching from a deep color (F&B Hague Blue) to a much lighter grey/green. I understand I need to prime the walls first, but I'm unsure what color of primer to choose. Should I go with a mid-tone, or is a white or light primer better? Any advice would be super helpful!

You might not actually need to prime at all! Priming mainly helps with adhesion and blocking stains, and sometimes hiding previous colors can be a bonus rather than a necessity. If the color change is significant, weigh whether using a couple of coats of your new paint might be cheaper than wasting primer.

White primer should work great for your situation. If you're concerned about getting the best coverage, consider asking someone at the paint store to tint your primer to a lighter shade of your new color—it helps a lot! I’ve done this before, and it made the whole process smoother for my customers.

Going with a white primer is a solid choice! It’ll provide a good base and coverage. Just a heads-up: you might want to avoid tinting the primer to match your final paint shade too closely. It can make it tricky to see where you've painted, which could lead to patchy spots later on.
