What Should I Consider Before Going with DIY Batteries?

Hey everyone! I'm wrapping up the design for my home's energy system, and I'm contemplating the pros and cons of using DIY batteries. Currently, I have an EG4 12000XP and two EG4 wall mount indoor 48V 280Ah batteries in mind, but I'm thinking of switching to BASEN GREEN 48V 300Ah batteries for some cost savings. I've identified a few downsides to using DIY batteries, like having to assemble them myself, the aesthetic preference I have for the EG4 batteries, and concerns about battery information and data access. Are there any other downsides I should be aware of? Is the EG4 battery significantly better quality than the BASEN GREEN? And once the warranty expires, are EG4 batteries serviceable? Looking forward to your insights!

I've played around with DIY batteries for my travel trailer, which is fun, but for my house, I want reliability. Certified, plug-and-play systems are way easier in the long run since minor issues won't leave you stranded without power.

I feel you there! I’m leaning towards EG4 for my house to avoid the hassle. I might experiment with DIY for my future shop!

One advantage of DIY is you get to choose your Battery Management System (BMS) and it's easier to replace parts as needed. With pre-built batteries, the components are often less accessible, and you might not understand what’s gone wrong when issues arise. Just be cautious with the BMS setup to avoid charging issues that lead to cell undercharging.

That’s a solid point about troubleshooting! I’ve had frustrating experiences with customer support for commercial batteries, which makes DIY appealing if you know how to fix problems yourself.

You'll definitely want to factor in a thorough cost analysis between your savings and the time you'll spend on DIY assembly and maintenance. The biggest downside of DIY is often the time commitment. If you enjoy tinkering and learning, it's great, but if you prefer hassle-free use, a pre-built battery with support is likely a better option.

Totally agree! I love DIY projects, but I can't stand the thought of being without power due to a battery failure. Good customer support is worth a lot for me!
