Hey everyone! I've been dealing with some frustrating rainwater leaks behind the support beams in my basement. I've owned my house for 5 years, and while it's mostly just an occasional issue, I'd really like to address it before it causes damage.
I've attached some images of the area and the support beams for context. They're 2x4s propped on small concrete blocks, and as you can see, they're starting to pull away from the wall. The upstairs area directly above them includes the main entryway and a spare bathroom, so I'm concerned about potential damage.
I've noticed leaks mainly during heavy rains or when the snow melts, which is when the post on the left springs a significant leak. The water seems to be entering around the nails that secure the beams, or possibly from above where the poured basement meets the brick wall. I've previously filled a gap between my driveway and the house with sealant, which helped but clearly isn't a full fix.
I'm wondering if I should remove the beams, patch the holes with cement, and replace them with adjustable floor jacks. Would love to hear your advice!

It’s generally not a great idea to fix basement leaks from the inside. You’ll still have water getting through your foundation, which can cause damage over time. You need to approach this from the outside for a lasting solution. Here are a few things you could try:
- Ensure the grading around your home directs water away.
- Make sure your gutters are functioning properly to divert roof runoff.
- You might need to excavate around any cracks and apply an elastomeric coating.
- Installing an exterior French drain could also help awesome with water management.
Honestly, your sealant likely isn’t blocking all the water. It may have helped, but it sounds like it’s still getting in from somewhere. As for your beams, they don’t seem crucial structurally. Removing them probably won’t cause any huge issues. Make sure your gutters and grading are good because water will find its way in regardless of how watertight you think it is. You can definitely patch up the holes with hydraulic cement!
There’s a strong chance that the ground right next to your house needs to be graded higher. Ideally, you want the soil to slope away from the foundation. I did this, and it made a world of difference for my basement! My neighbor even went as far as creating a concrete V-shaped ditch around the house to help direct the water away.

So, if the crack is below my driveway, does that mean I’d need to jackhammer it up to fix the problem? That sounds like a huge effort for just a little leak.
Also, should I just replace the beams with new 2x4s or can I use adjustable supports instead?
