What Squares Should Beginners in Woodworking Get?

I'm just starting out in woodworking, and I'm wondering what types of squares I really need. I know a speed square is essential, but I've seen them in different sizes. Do I need more than one size, or will one size be enough? Also, what about combination squares and T-squares? They seem to come in various sizes as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It really boils down to the kind of projects you want to tackle. For instance, building a keepsake box versus an armoire can change what sizes you'll need. But if you're just starting out, a speed square and a combination square are definitely adequate. My best tip? Acquire tools as you need them. Your projects will guide what you need next! So if you find you need a T-square later, grab one then.

Right now, I'm focused on making birdhouses and maybe a small workbench. So I think I’ll stick with the basics!

To kick things off, I'd recommend getting a 6" speed square, a 12" combination square, and an 8-10" try square. These should cover most of your needs without breaking the bank! I wouldn't worry too much about the fancier T-squares until you have a specific project that requires one. If you do traditional joinery, a smaller 3-4" try square is super handy, but that depends on whether you're going that route.
