Suggestions for Low-Maintenance Ground Cover on a Shady Clay Slope?

Asked By Gr34nThumbz99 On

I'm not a fan of gardening and want things to be as hassle-free as possible. I have a sloped area with heavy clay soil that's mostly shaded and has some stones. What are some good ground cover plants that can spread out and help prevent weeds without requiring much upkeep? Ideally, I want something that I can just mow over occasionally.

Have you thought about clover? It's easy to grow and pretty low-maintenance, plus it adds a nice green touch!

Hardy geraniums are a great choice! They're super resilient, low-maintenance, and have beautiful long-lasting flowers. If they spread too much, you can either mow them down or just pull them out easily since their roots are shallow—perfect for your needs!

I’d recommend Ivy, Pachysandra, or Vinca for low maintenance options. If you’re open to larger plants, think about evergreen shrubs like rhododendrons or viburnum tinus. They can grow taller and outcompete the weeds, plus they mostly require minimal maintenance aside from trimming every few years.

For your situation, consider Cotoneaster dammeri or Cotoneaster horizontalis. They spread well but may need a bit of training to stay flat. Juniperus prostrata is another option. Vinca major or minor are also popular choices, though make sure to check if they’re suitable for your area since they can be invasive in some regions. Just be ready to manage them if they start to spread too much!

I read that Cotoneaster can be invasive in the UK, so maybe that’s something to think about! Also, isn't Vinca an annual? You’d need to plant it again every year, right?

Totally agree with the Cotoneaster suggestion! Just manage it well and it should work!
