Anyone Painted Their Plywood Subfloor?

I'm considering painting my plywood subfloor as a temporary fix until I can install new floors upstairs this fall. I ripped out the old carpet because I just couldn't stand it anymore, filled the gaps, and sanded the floor. Now I'm stuck deciding between painting it or staining it. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

I'd say go for it! Whether you paint or stain, remember it's just temporary since you'll be covering it up anyway. Be bold!

I totally painted my subfloor! We had to deal with some cat urine from previous tenants, so I started with shellac primer in the affected areas and then used some leftover latex paint everywhere else. After carpeting over it, I can honestly say I haven't smelled anything funky since. It really was a lifesaver!

I used Kilz for a similar issue, and it worked wonders!

If it were my choice, I'd lean towards painting. Just check with your paint store about which type is durable enough for traffic. That way, when you install your new floors, covering the paint won't be an issue at all!

I recommend latex porch paint; it dries quickly and is tough enough. Just make sure to give it enough time to cure before putting down carpet.
