I'm building a custom bookshelf for a friend, and I'm adding a false bottom to it. I'm planning to use birch plywood and oak for the materials. The shelf will be around 1 foot deep, 30 inches high, and 3 feet wide. I'm looking for suggestions on hidden hinges, buttons, or maybe just a drawer mechanism. How would you approach this design?

If this hidden space is for an occasional use, you don’t want your friend to have to pull all the books out just to access it. I’d recommend looking into hidden drawers with push-to-open slides. It makes it super easy to access.

Yeah, I figured it wouldn’t be used every day, which is why I’m aiming for something discreet. Those hinges sound practical, but I worry about how it’ll work with the trim on carpet.
