What’s the Safe Angle for Bending Flexible Auger Drill Bits When Running Cables?

I'm trying to run some cables from the first floor to my finished basement using a long flexible auger drill bit (around 4-5 feet). I'm planning to cut a small hole for the box at shin height, in line with my existing power outlets, and then thread the drill bit upwards to drill into a joist. However, I'm concerned about how to actually maneuver the long bit through that small hole, as I might need to bend it at an angle of about 70 degrees. I'm worried it might snap and cause an accident! How do others safely use these flexible bits for such tasks?

Definitely get a flex bit placement handle! It makes a huge difference when you're trying to maneuver the bit. I completely forgot about it until someone mentioned it—good catch! It’ll help you manage those bends better.

If you're dealing with a chimney, check for any gaps around it; sometimes you can run low voltage cable through there. It might be worth it to run it up to the attic and back down to the basement, but I get that it doesn’t always line up with your plans!

I've used flexible auger bits a few times for running cables, and bending them significantly has worked fine for me. I can’t recall if I hit a 70-degree angle, but it’s usually good. Also, consider using one of those flex bit handles; they really help with control and safety!
