I'm making a switch to a pre-made cabinet for my cat's litterbox, but I've learned the hard way that even the smallest accidental urine overshoot can seep through cracks and seams, ruining the cheap pressboard and eventually dripping onto my carpet. I want to fully seal the interior from the get-go—like caulking all seams and coating up to 10 inches deep with a plastic material to ensure nothing escapes. I'm looking for advice on the best way to achieve a watertight seal. The solution needs to be safe for both humans and pets once dry (ideally low VOC), and it should withstand cat urine and cleaning supplies without breaking down. A spray product would be great, or something paintable, but I want to avoid fiberglass as that's beyond my skill level. Also, I want to seal the entire interior, not just the floor, since laminate rolls haven't worked out for me before, cracking and leaking at seams.

Why not use rubber membrane that's usually meant for flat roofs? Just glue it to the walls and floor, then cover it with vinyl flooring tiles. After that, caulk all the edges, and you should be set!
Totally get that! Just make sure to choose a product that's designed to minimize those issues.
If you're worried about sealing just the lid, it might be worth considering a box with a side entry instead of a top one. This could help you avoid some of the problems altogether. Just a thought!
I suggest lining the interior with shower wall material and sealing the seams with caulk. You could go for options like FRP, PVC, or NPC, which typically come in 8x4 sheets. This should give you a durable, waterproof barrier.
Oh, that's an excellent idea, thank you!

Hmm, that's interesting. I've never used roofing rubber before, so I’ll have to check it out. Just the off-gassing worries me since it'll be in an enclosed space, especially if urine gets on it...
