What’s the Best Material for Kids’ Playground Area?

I'm planning to improve a muddy corner of my yard where we have a playset, and I was initially thinking about using pea gravel. However, I've seen a lot of negative opinions about it online. The area is a mess right now, so I definitely need to replace the surface with something affordable and easy to install myself. It would be great if it could help with bug control and be safe for the kids to play on barefoot, while also providing good drainage. Given that pea gravel is often considered a poor choice, is there a better material that meets my needs and budget? Thanks for any advice!

For an affordable option that kids can play on barefoot, I recommend sand. You can get a truckload of it delivered easily and it drains well. Just make sure to use a plastic barrier underneath to prevent it from mixing with mud. Just don’t go for bagged sand if you're trying to keep costs down – it's way more expensive that way!

I personally think playground mulch is a better option than pea gravel. It's softer and has a good safety rating for falls, plus it's less likely to get dirty than gravel. Sure, mulch will need to be replaced occasionally, but pea gravel just becomes a mess and you can't really clean it well. I remember my old school had pea gravel, and falling onto it would hurt!

Is it really that much easier to clean up the mulch compared to pea gravel?

Using cardboard to smother the grass and topping it with playground mulch worked wonders for us. It's a great, effective solution without too much hassle.
