Is My 16AWG Cable Safe for My Eco Worthy Solar Kit?

I recently got a basic Eco Worthy solar kit to power a light and fan in my outhouse. The kit includes a 16AWG cable for connecting the solar charge controller to the battery. However, the battery has a maximum charge/discharge current of 50A, and the solar charge controller is rated for 30A. With these specifications, I'm wondering if the 16AWG cable is safe to use. Also, should I incorporate a breaker or fuse with this setup?

With your solar setup, if you’re charging at 200 watts, you’ll be pulling around 16.66 amps, which is okay for a 16AWG cable over short distances (ideally under 1.8 feet to keep voltage drop minimal). However, if you plan on running this setup longer or at higher currents, consider upgrading to a thicker wire like 14AWG or 12AWG to prevent any issues. Also, adding a fuse is generally a good practice for safety!

I get your concern about the current, but 16AWG should manage it fine for short distances. Just keep an eye on connections since any poor ones can get super hot.

You might want to switch to DC LED lights and a DC fan instead of using the inverter. It’ll streamline your setup and might save some energy in the long run!

You can also look up a voltage drop calculator online; tools like Rapidtables can really help you figure out if your cable size is appropriate for your distances and current needs.
