I'm wrapping up my first major renovation where we added square footage, rerouted HVAC and electrical, and did a lot of work including new hardwood floors and fresh paint. We're nearing the end and I want to know what key things I should look for or consider when the contractor says everything is finished. Any helpful tips?

Make sure to grab some blue tape and mark any areas you want the contractor to review. This way, you won't forget anything during punch list day! Just be mindful, as left on too long, blue tape can damage fresh finishes like paint or floor poly.
Start checking things now! Jot down anything that seems off or was damaged during the work. It's important to speak up about these issues as you notice them, but if any parts seem unfinished, be patient. When it's punch list day, ensure everything is done, the area is cleaned up, and you're okay to proceed with the final payment after discussing any issues with your contractor.
Give yourself some time in the space after everything's done—try staying for at least two weeks. This will let you notice any issues naturally and create a more comprehensive list, making your punch-out process cleaner and quicker.
Check the paint when there's lots of light, whether natural or artificial. It's also a good idea to have a couple of friends come over, look at the renovations with fresh eyes, and help spot things you might miss. Don't forget to mark any items with blue tape that need addressing!

Yeah, I agree, but I'd suggest using post-it notes instead. They’re safer and won't risk damaging freshly painted walls or floors.
