What’s the best way to drill a pilot hole at an angle for a door knocker?

I'm trying to hang a door knocker, but I've noticed that the threaded holes are at an angle. This means I need to drill my pilot hole through the door at an angle too. Does anyone have tips on how to make sure I get this right?

If you want to avoid making a jig, start your bit at about 1/8 to 3/16 inch deep, then angle it to match your target angle. Go slow and keep adjusting as needed—you'll get it!

That sounds like a good approach! Just take your time and I'm sure you'll nail it.

If you're serious about getting it perfect, why not use a T bevel to check the angle? Drill your pilot holes in a scrap 2x4 first. Once you're happy, use that as a jig for the door. If you think you’ll need it again, consider a portable drill press—they’re not too pricey.

Measure the distance between the threaded holes on your door knocker, ignoring that annoying angle offset. Drill slightly oversized holes straight through the door at 90 degrees. Grab some fender washers to cover the holes and get a solid nut mounting surface.

Honestly, it’s not a huge deal. The screw head will cover any minor angle issues. Just go for it and hang that thing up!

Hey, can you just use the knocker itself as a guide for your drill bit? That might help you get the angle right!

I suggest using a screw with a larger head. Just make your holes a bit bigger to give yourself some wiggle room. This way, you won’t have to stress over the angle too much!
