Tips for Squaring Walls During a Kitchen Remodel

I'm in the middle of a kitchen remodel, and I've run into a bit of a challenge with one wall being about 3/4 of an inch out of square while another at the corner is half an inch out. I'm considering using shims and installing new drywall, but I'm also thinking about building cabinetry that can accommodate the unevenness. What would you recommend for dealing with this in a kitchen?

When we tackled this issue during my parents' kitchen remodel, we just installed the cabinets as if the walls were square. Then we cut the countertops to fit the actual openings. It saves a lot of hassle without needing to fix the walls, and it works pretty well!

I get that! I'm considering tearing down the walls and putting up new drywall instead.

It’s a good idea to get those walls squared up now rather than later. Trust me, you'll be thankful for it when you install flooring and cabinets. If you have a planer, you can create some progressively thick shims to attach to the studs. Just make sure to vary the thickness by about 1/8" as you go along—that’ll ensure you have solid backing for attaching things.

It'll definitely help in the long run! Keep us posted on what you decide!

My floors will thank me? I'm not even sure if my walls are square to the ceiling, but I guess it can't hurt to try!
