Is it Safe to Mix Crushed Glass with Potting Soil for Better Drainage?

I'm looking to create well-draining soil for my plants, but I have limited access to supplies and a bit of an unusual situation. I was originally going to buy succulent soil and mix it with regular potting soil, but after an accident with a glass mixing bowl and my cat, I now have some finely shattered glass. My question is, can I mix this safe, non-sharp glass with my potting soil instead of buying the succulent mix?

I wouldn't recommend using crushed glass in your potting mix. Even if it's not sharp, you could still end up running your hands through it when you're planting or repotting. It might just lead to a lot of discomfort when handled. There are definitely safer options out there like pool filter sand, which is really affordable and just as effective for improving drainage!

Thanks for the tip! I hadn’t thought of that option and I’ll definitely check it out!

You could mix crushed glass in theory to achieve quicker drainage, but glass lacks the ability to hold oxygen in the soil. Unlike perlite or pumice, it might lead to faster-draining mixes without the needed breathability for your plants. So, it might not be the best solution for long-term growth.
