What’s the Best Budget Material for Raised Garden Beds on a Roof?

I'm planning to build my first raised garden bed on my rooftop, where the structure can support it, and I don't want it deeper than 30cm. Since I'm on a tight budget living with my parents while in school, I'm considering using wood, but I've heard that some treated woods might leach chemicals into the soil, which would be unsafe for growing edibles. Alternatively, there's aerated concrete available, but I worry about its longevity in wet conditions. Would using wood be safe, and if so, should I seal it to protect it from moisture? What about drainage—is it just the bottom that matters? Plus, I need to figure out a cheaper way to get soil since bags are costly. I'd appreciate any suggestions or experiences you have! Thanks for reading!

You definitely have some options! For a budget-friendly raised bed, rough-cut lumber from a local lumber yard is a great idea—often cheaper than what you’d find in stores. Heavy-duty pallets can also work wonders, and you might be able to snag those for free from local businesses. Just make sure to check that they're safe for growing edibles! As for soil, consider searching for bulk compost options in your area—it can be a much better value than buying bags. You can even calculate exactly how much you need using a raised bed soil calculator. Start with low-cost or free materials, and you can upgrade your soil over time. Happy gardening!

That's solid advice! Also, look into any municipal compost programs nearby; they might offer good deals or even free compost. It really helps cut down on costs!
