I saw some grape plants for sale and got really excited about the idea of growing them. But I've heard they might need a lot of space. Mel mentioned something about using a trellis to save room. My square foot garden is 4' by 6' with a trellis on the 6' side. I live in central Illinois. Is it feasible to grow grapes in this setup, or will they overrun my whole garden?

Definitely use a trellis if you decide to grow grapes. I've got mine climbing along the fence surrounding my garden, and they're doing great. But honestly, I wouldn't try growing them in a square foot garden because they're perennials and they need a bit more room to spread out. Just something to keep in mind!
Grapes are amazing, but a raised bed isn't the best choice for them. They tend to grow quite large, so you'll need to trim them regularly to keep them in check. Just be prepared for a bit of maintenance if you go this route!
One thing to watch out for—grapes are super toxic to dogs. If you have a pup around, you might want to think twice about adding grapes to your garden! Just a heads up.
