I'm in Michigan, living in a low-lying area with a high water table, so my sump pump runs quite a bit. Currently, I have a 1.5-inch PVC discharge pipe that's around 60 feet long, leading to a ditch in front of my house. The pipe is pretty old, about 30 years, and due to the high mineral content in the groundwater, it builds up calcium inside. I had it jet cleaned about 5 years ago for $900, but it's clogged again. My plumber suggests replacing it with a 3-inch PVC pipe for around $5,000, claiming that the 1.5-inch is the bare minimum and tends to clog easily in my situation. I'm considering whether it's worth it to replace the line altogether rather than just cleaning it out.

You might want to think about getting a jetting kit for a pressure washer if you're willing to put in some work. If you buy a decent electric pressure washer and a jetting kit, you could clean the pipe yourself every fall for not a lot of money. This way, you wouldn’t have to deal with the clogging issue as often and could save on those expensive cleanouts!
If you can afford the $5k for the replacement, just make sure you’re not getting ripped off. You could potentially save a ton if you handle the digging yourself. I think getting a mini backhoe could make this a one-day job and save you money. Even if you hire a plumber, it should cost less than $2500 if it's straightforward. DIY the digging might only end up costing you around $1,000 total! Just remember to have locates done before you start digging.
Exactly! I did a similar project myself, and it was way cheaper than hiring everything out. Renting equipment helps a lot!
I wouldn’t rush to replace the pipe if it’s still in decent shape. Consider renting equipment to do it yourself for under $200! There are so many tutorials online. You might also think about using citric acid or vinegar to help manage the calcium build-up if replacing isn't critical.

Totally agree! I spent about $200 on a pressure washer and jetting kit, and it’s been a lifesaver. It doesn’t take long, and you’ll have peace of mind knowing it’s clean.
