What Type of Subfloor Am I Dealing With?

Hey everyone! I recently moved into a home built in 1927 and I'm starting some renovations. I've been ripping up the old carpet to replace it with some laminate flooring from Mohawk that I bought at Costco. However, to my surprise, I didn't find the typical plywood subfloor under the carpet. Instead, I'm seeing something different. Can anyone tell me what this material is? Also, is it okay to lay the new laminate and a moisture barrier directly on top of this existing layer?

What you’re seeing is actually the original floor, not a subfloor like plywood. It's pretty common in houses this age. Just check for any issues before going ahead.

It looks like you’ve got some Tongue & Groove fir there. Definitely a solid choice as a subfloor! You should be good to lay your Mohawk laminate and underlayment right over it. Just make sure to inspect it for any nails or uneven spots like humps or dips before you get started.

Yep, that’s pretty much just an old flooring layer. Just check its condition to make sure it’s sound before laying the new flooring.
