What kind of pipe did I accidentally dig up?

I accidentally struck this copper pipe while digging in my yard. It's 1/2 inch in diameter and is located less than a foot underground, about 100 feet from my house at the back of the property (far from the street). The only utilities we have are electric and internet, so I'm not sure what this could be. The only thing that resembles it in my mind is a propane hookup for a grill or fireplace that we've never used, but I don't understand why it would extend so far back. Any ideas? Here's a picture of the pipe: https://imgur.com/a/EnFn9Ij

Considering the size, it does sound like a propane line, which is pretty common for what you're describing. However, without knowing where your propane tank and BBQ or fireplace are positioned, it's hard to confirm. Just keep in mind that you'd want to be cautious to avoid any gas leaks!

Yeah, that's the concern! I just don't want to cause any issues if it is a propane line.

From the info you provided, it could potentially be for irrigation, especially given its depth and location. But it's unusual to see copper used for that. Does your property have any irrigation systems that you're aware of?

Not that I know of. I only have a hookup for propane next to the house, and it goes underground for a bit before entering the house where the fireplace is. It's quite a distance from where I found this pipe.
