Is it Safe to Use a Rental Shop Vac After Someone Else?

Hey everyone, I just rented a shop vac for some cleaning at home and I noticed that when it turns on or off, a bit of dust blows out the back. I asked the rental employee about it, and they mentioned it could just be drywall dust since it's tough to clean all that from the filters. But now I'm really worried about what the previous renter might have used it for. Can I trust it won't have any hazardous materials from previous uses?

The odds of someone using a rental shop vac for something super hazardous are pretty slim. You're probably in the clear. Just make sure to wipe everything down after you use it!

True, but what if they had asbestos or lead paint? That's not something you want to mess around with.

Yeah, that’s true. Just be cautious, but most likely, it’s just harmless dust.

I get why you'd worry, but if you can see dust blowing out, maybe just don’t use it and consider buying one. They often have great sales, and it’s a better peace of mind!

I agree! I got a nice one on Black Friday for a steal. Worth it to have your own.

For sure! I’ve seen some good deals lately. Plus, it’s nice to have one around for projects.

Honestly, a lot of people do silly things with rental gear. But yeah, it’s most likely just drywall dust like the clerk said. I wouldn't stress too much about it. Just clean your space well after using it, and you'll be fine!

Good point! Still, it makes me think about what could be lurking in these rentals.

Right? It’s wild to think about what some might suck up and just return without a second thought.
