I'm looking to improve the ventilation in my 1956 split-level home. Right now, I have a gable intake along with a gable attic fan on the opposite end, and there are four box vents at the peak of the roof. However, the front soffit area is completely solid and not vented at all. Would adding vented soffits to the front of my house help reduce my cooling costs?

I think installing soffit vents is a solid idea! The airflow from soffits can help cool more than just the stagnant air at the top of the attic. However, I am a bit worried about adding too much intake and possibly upsetting the airflow balance. I know my place tends to heat up in the summer, so I'm hoping this adjustment, paired with the insulation upgrades I made, will help.
When I renovated my old home, I switched from a single gable vent with a powered attic fan to soffit and ridge vents. The change was noticeable—my attic stays about 10 degrees cooler than before. If you're looking to cool down your attic, adding soffit vents could really help!
Just a heads up, if you decide to add soffit vents, make sure to cover up those gable vents. You don’t want to mess with the airflow system you have going on. It's crucial for proper ventilation!

Yeah, that's my worry too! It's tricky to find that sweet spot for airflow. But with the insulation improvements, I hope it’ll work out alright for both of us!
