What are some DIY ways to cover up awful cedar paneling?

We have this attic that technically qualifies as finished, but I really can't call it that due to the terrible installation of cedar paneling. It's all messed up with uneven gaps and damage. Now that I have a new baby, I can't spend money on tearing it out or hiring a pro for drywall installation. I'm looking for affordable and DIY-friendly alternatives. I'm worried that painting won't hide the awful installation and damage. Would covering it with something like beadboard work? I'm open to any creative, budget-friendly solutions that are safe!

You might want to consider using tempered hardboard, which you can find in big box stores like Home Depot. It's about $13 per 4x8 sheet, much cheaper than beadboard. You can cover the cedar paneling with it and then paint it to make it look like drywall. Just go for a satin finish with a textured roller to match the smooth hardboard surface. It’s a pretty durable option too – I used it recently to move heavy gravel, and it held up well!

If you’re really set on DIY, you could just put drywall over the existing paneling. But since you mentioned cost as a factor, consider that might not be the best route. If you could share some photos, you might get even more tailored advice to your situation!
