Can I Recycle My Flagstone Floor for My Garden?

I'm working on my house, which was built back in 1956. Originally, there was a flagstone patio in the backyard, but the previous owners turned it into an enclosed porch that's not insulated. I'm considering options for this space, including making it a finished area and pouring a new patio outside. However, I really like the existing flagstone; it's in good shape and has some sentimental value for me. I'm thinking about removing the flagstone floor and using it in my garden. I know it won't be easy, but is it possible? My plan is to carefully jackhammer the concrete between the stones to lift them out, clean off any excess concrete, and then lay them in the garden. I'm okay if they get a little banged up, but I want to avoid breaking them. Any thoughts on this?

You could definitely try using a pry bar to pop them out from the grout or cement. Just keep in mind that doing it piece by piece might require a lot of time and effort. But if you're up for it, it could be worth it!

I think it's definitely worth trying! I’ve removed tile before without breaking them, and the key is to get under them. If you just cover the stones up, you might regret not saving them later. It could be a bit tricky, but give it a shot!

Yeah, if you just leave them, you might kick yourself in a few years for not giving it a go.

I have a similar flagstone floor in my house, and it’s surprisingly hard to tell how old they really are! They were laid down in sheets, so it might not exactly match your situation. My flagstones ended up being a fun feature, but taking them out will surely be a challenge! Good luck with your project!

Ha, just be prepared for some serious work if you decide to do it! I can tell you from experience, getting that floor up can be a real pain!
