Do I Need a Second Line for a Recirculating Hot Water Pump?

I'm considering installing a recirculating hot water pump, but I saw conflicting info about needing a second hot water line. One source mentioned I'd have to run a new line, but I watched an installation video for the Watts pump that showed a crossover sensor valve connecting the hot and cold water lines at the farthest point without needing an extra line. Can anyone clarify if I can install the pump this way without running a second line?

You're on the right track! You can definitely install the recirculating pump without a second line, as long as there aren't any check valves messing things up between the crossover and the tank. Sounds like you should be good to go!

Thanks! ? I'll have to look into what a check valve is, but I'm pretty sure I don’t have one.

Just a heads up: if you're using that crossover valve, some hot water will sneak into your cold lines, so when you first turn on the cold tap, it might be warmer than usual. It’s not a big deal for most folks, but just something to keep in mind!

I get that! I'm mainly trying to fix the wait for hot water in my shower. A little warmth in the cold water doesn't bother me since I don't really use cold in there.
