Hey everyone! I'm a total newbie in woodworking, and I'm thinking about crafting my own wooden dining table. I want it to be a decent size—specifically, 200cm x 90cm x 4 cm (or about 79in x 36in x 1.5in). The goal is to have enough space for 8 people to sit comfortably, and I'm planning on using oak for the top, which will weigh around 60kg (133 pounds).
Here's where I'm stuck: since it's a large table, I'm considering using metal legs. I'm unsure about the best type of legs to support that weight. Should I place them in the middle, or would having four legs spread out at the corners work? Also, if you have any tutorials or resources that could help me build a durable table, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

Totally agree about finding plans! Building a table is definitely achievable, but a guide is super helpful. I made a similar table about a decade ago and added a cabinet-like structure underneath. That provided great support without compromising on design. If you decide on metal legs, consider welding a frame that matches the size of your table. Just attach the legs to that frame and you can cover it up with an apron for a clean look!
It's great that you're diving into this project! Remember, the structure underneath is vital, not just for supporting the weight but also for preventing sagging or racking. Traditional designs often use aprons, which can significantly enhance stability. Don't worry though, some people build without them, but it may lead to issues down the line if you're not careful. Best to follow some plans that guide you through the process!

I always thought aprons were just for looks! Good to know they have a real purpose.
