Advice Needed: Modifying Outdoor Bench Plans Without Pressure Treated Wood

Hey everyone! I'm gearing up to make some Aldo Leopold-style benches for my outdoor wedding this summer and I have a few constraints to consider. I'm avoiding pressure treated wood due to personal preference and budget constraints, but I'm open to sealing or finishing alternate types of wood. I have a decent set of woodworking tools and some experience in rough carpentry, but I wouldn't call myself an expert. I also have access to a great local sawmill for wood options. I found this [bench plan](https://rogueengineer.com/diy-outdoor-bench-plans-with-back/) which I like because it's wider and sturdier compared to standard Leopold benches. However, using cedar might break the bank since I want to make several benches.

My main questions are: If you were in my shoes, how would you approach the project with non-PT lumber and limited funds? Should I modify the existing plans to cut costs, or would you suggest a completely different design? I'm flexible with the design but want benches that are both functional and durable since I intend to gift them to the retreat center post-wedding. They'll be placed along paths and in the garden for guests to enjoy. I'd appreciate any ideas or guidance you can share! Thanks a bunch!

You might want to check for scrap wood or pallets that can be repurposed. You could create simple benches without backs, which cuts down on costs to nearly nothing, aside from fasteners. Since this is just for the wedding, you could even leave the benches unfinished; just make sure to clean up the wood dust so no one ends up with sawdust on their clothes when they get up!

Thanks for the suggestion! Just a heads-up - I'm actually building these benches as a gift for the retreat center, so I need them to be durable enough for long-term use.
