How Can I Make My Peg Loom Dowels Stronger?

Asked By User5673@! On

I'm working on making a peg loom, and I'm using dowels that are cut down to about 4 or 6 inches in length. My issue is that the tension is so high that some of the dowels keep snapping. I realize that dowels are typically made from soft pine wood, which can bend easily. Is there a way to make the wood harder or denser so it can handle the stress better? What methods would you recommend to achieve this?

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll definitely check out hardwood dowels. Seems like it's the best way to go!

I actually make pegs for my embroidery looms using walnut. It's quite durable and holds up well under pressure. If you have access to the right tools, walnut can be a fantastic choice!

You might want to consider using hardwood dowels instead of those soft pine ones. Oak is a great option because it's much stronger and can handle the tension better. You can usually find hardwood dowels at most home improvement stores.
