I'm working on a floating desk and credenza cabinet for my office, and my wife is really into the light walnut look. She specifically wants to avoid a finish that darkens the wood. What are some good finish options that provide protection, especially for the desk, while keeping the walnut as light as possible?

For something that won't tint the walnut too much, I recommend using water-based polyurethane. It provides great protection with minimal color change, although just be cautious because if you apply it too thickly, it can sometimes leave a bluish cast. It's definitely worth a shot!
It's true that most finishes will darken the wood to some extent. One tip is to test different finishes on the back or underneath where it won't be visible first. This way, your wife can choose her favorite look without compromising the overall appearance of the pieces. Another great option could be Danish oil in a neutral tone followed by some finishing wax to keep it light.
Rubio Monocoat has some awesome options, including lightening tints, and I think the Dunes color might be perfect for achieving that light walnut vibe you're after. It’s a bit of a premium choice, but they offer small samples so you can test it out without going all in right away!

Great suggestion! I'll definitely try testing on the back first. Thanks!
