Hey everyone! I'm completely new to woodworking, but I stumbled upon this cool project and I think I could give it a shot. I feel like it's simple enough for a beginner like me, especially if I can get some wood pre-cut. For another project, I managed to find the wood I needed already sanded, which helps a ton too. I'm confident with staining the wood, but my main concern is figuring out how to join the wood pieces together. I don't anticipate them needing to support any significant weight apart from their own. I'm also not too attached to including the lightbulbs, which would lighten the load even more. Am I missing any steps? What's the best approach for tackling this on my own? I've got some tools at my disposal and can get help if needed, but I'd love to do as much as I can myself!

For a joint like this, half-lap joints could be your best bet. You just need to cut halfway through both pieces where they cross so they fit together nicely. This joint is pretty strong when glued, so you won’t have issues with the weight! How you cut them depends on the tools you have and your comfort level. Just make sure both pieces extend beyond the joint to keep everything even.
I totally recommend half-lap joints too! If you have access to a table saw with a dado stack, that would be the easiest way to get consistent cuts. Just set up some stops for accuracy on each piece. After cutting, clamp and glue them together, then finish with sanding and stain. Super simple for a beginner!

Yeah, but not everyone starts off with a table saw, right? You can also use simpler methods for joining if needed.
