What’s the Best Way to Cut a 1″ x 9.5″ Maple Board Down to 1/2″?

I have a piece of maple that's 1 inch thick and 9.5 inches wide, and I'm hoping to cut it down to half an inch thick while keeping the width the same. What's the most effective method to achieve this?

You can definitely achieve this through a process called resawing. A bandsaw is your best bet here, but you could also use a handsaw or even a table saw if you’re cautious. Just keep in mind that you’ll lose some thickness to the kerf (the thickness of the blade), so you probably won’t end up with two perfectly 1/2" pieces. Instead, you might end up around 1/4" for the second piece. It's a good idea to expect some loss during this process!

That's true! I've tried this before, and it’s hard to get the pieces exactly the same. Also, I'd recommend planning on a bit of extra sanding afterward to flatten them out.

Remember to also check out some videos on resawing. They can provide great tips. Just keep in mind that whatever method you choose, expect to lose a bit of material, and don’t aim for perfect halves right away! It's more about getting close and then planing as needed.

Totally, and also think about the wood's stability after cutting. Sometimes the wood can warp after resawing, which might affect your final thickness. It might be a good idea to let it rest for a bit after cutting.

I agree a bandsaw would be ideal for this, especially given the width of your board. Table saws can be dangerous with smaller pieces, and they typically require more space than you’ll have with that size. If you don't have a bandsaw, you can try resawing with a hand saw too, though it requires patience!

Definitely stick with the bandsaw! I’ve taken on similar projects, and the results are much better than trying to manage it on a table saw.
