Hey everyone! I've been really wanting to dive into gardening, but I've developed quite an irrational fear of slugs. I've seen them gather in my garden during rainy nights, and it's made me hesitant to start outdoor gardening. I'm considering indoor options instead. I'm looking for some reassurance, plus any tips or tricks to help me deal with this fear. I really want to plant flowers, veggies, and fruits since I've recently turned a new leaf in my life after letting go of a tough addiction.

I totally understand where you're coming from! Slugs can be so gross, but don't let that stop you from gardening—it’s truly a wonderful and fulfilling hobby. To keep slugs at bay, try choosing more established plants, as they tend to withstand slug attacks better than small seedlings. Also, avoid gardening when it’s damp since slugs love hiding in moist areas. And hey, gloves are a smart move! I always keep a shovel handy to gently relocate any slugs I find away from my garden.
You’ll mostly be safe if you garden during the day! Slugs are more of a nighttime thing, so just enjoy the sunny hours outside. Plus, do some research on plants that slugs don't like—shrubs and certain well-established flowers are great for that. Avoid things like hostas or newly seeded plants, as slugs tend to feast on those.
Slugs definitely have their roles in the ecosystem, but I totally get the ick factor! If you're really concerned about them devouring your plants, there are plenty of slug-resistant options. Many perennials, alpines, and even some shrubs stand a fighting chance against them. So don’t let the fear stop you—most plants will bounce back, even if they get nibbled a bit. It’s about finding the right balance!
